Fact Sheet

Founded:
2010
Founder:
Sriram Rupanagunta, serial entrepreneur
Vision:
Enterprise storage architectures are going to undergo a sea-change in the next decade. Web2.0s have invented a new storage architecture that runs on industry standard x86 servers using sophisticated software to create extremely reliable and scalable storage systems. This architecture, called Private Cloud Storage, is so compelling that enterprises will have no option but to use it. Initially enterprises will start using this architecture for secondary storage and eventually for primary storage as well.
Mission:
Our target customers are enterprises that want to build Private Cloud Storage. Our software products will enable full-featured low-cost Private Cloud Storage deployment without requiring an in-house R&D team.
Markets:
Since private cloud architecture is inherently less expensive and more feature-rich, all enterprise storage will eventually move to this architecture over a period of time. This is especially true with storage costs expected to soar to 30% of all IT costs. However, customers are likely to implement this architecture in secondary-storage use-cases initially such as preservation, archiving and backup. Our estimate of the total accessible market for Private Cloud Storage software in secondary-storage use cases is $5.5B.

Gartner, a leading technology market research firm, predicts that clustered storage architectures will be a key technology for managing unstructured data in the cloud by 2013.
Technology:
Our technology is based on HC2, a massively scalable object-store. HC2 contains BSD licensed code from Sun’s Project Honeycomb. Honeycomb went through two product releases and won internal and external awards (Sun Chairman’s award, Infoworld 2009 Technology of the Year Award). There is no affiliation between TierraCloud and Oracle at this time.

The HC2 technology is at least a generation ahead of alternatives and allows benefits previously not achievable in the areas of automated data management, extreme data mobility and the ability to run 3rd party storage apps to extend platform functionality.
Customers:
A number of digital libraries are pilot customers for our first product, HC2 Preservation Edition for preservation archival of massive amounts of data. We are actively acquiring additional customers who need to preserve data in the digital library and life-sciences areas. Over time our customers will be from all segments of the industry including digital libraries, life science institutions, photo sites, film studios, HADOOP users, governments, law firms, mapping organizations etc. In fact, according to SNIA, 68% of companies surveyed indicated that they need 100-year archives! With organizations needing to preserve larger and larger amounts of data every year, without products such as HC2 there simply is no other viable alternative.

As we create additional products for other secondary storage and eventually primary storage use-cases, we expect that all enterprise customers will be target customers for us.
Products:
Our initial open-source product: HC2 Preservation Edition, based on HC2, targets Private Cloud Storage customers who want to preserve large amounts of data. Preservation (or preservation archival) is simply providing online reliable storage to massive amounts of unstructured or fixed-content data over a period of time.
